Darren Gough won the toss and chose to bat, Sayers and Vaughan put on 57 before Sayers departed for 17, Vaughan started to slowly but started to play some nice shots prior to lunch. Anthony McGrath joined him and stayed for 30 deliveries until out in the last over before lunch to Warne for 7. Yorkshire lunched at 77 for 2. Vaughan, playing increasingly well was joined by Younus Khan after lunch and the England captain soon completed his half century. After a partnership of 55 and having made a stylish 72 Yorkshire lost Vaughan run out. Rudolph soon went caught behind off Australian test bowler Stuart Clark to leave Yorkshire tottering on 149 for 4. Younus Khan completed a good 50 soon after. Brophy went quickly for 13. Younus was then joined by Rashid and they put together a valuable stand of 99, Khan going on to his first Yorkshire Championship century (151 balls, 14 fours) before falling to quick bowler James Bruce. Two runs later and Rashid who had made 54 (87 balls, 5 fours) went. Yorkshire fell away tamely after as Bruce ran through the lower order taking 4-56 the last five wickets fell for 17, Yorkshire all out 299.
Hampshire openers Adams and Brown survived the last eight overs of the day 25-0.
